I am a retired Army pilot (CWO5) who served 31 months in country in Vietnam between 1967 and 1972.
I have a friend who has recently met someone who is claiming to have been a Marine Captain and Cobra pilot who served with a Marine unit in the Central Highlands around 1972 that was attached to the 101st Airborne. He related to her an incident where one of the Cobra's in his unit was involved in the shooting down of a MIG. She, having been burned by war stories in the past, asked me to check it out.
I don't remember any such incident, either then or anytime during the war. I also thought all Marine units were out of country, but launching from offshore when needed, by around mid-1971. Nor am I aware of any such assignments of Marine units in the Central Highlands.
Can anyone enlighten me, if my aging brain has deleted this memorable event?
Thanks.
Sounds like a six scotch and water sea story to me.

Hueys shot down RVN bi-planes
Air America Hueys shot down 2 NVN bi-planes over the pdj. 1963?
I know this is true because I know the pilots, and this has been written up elsewhere. I have a story on file (Somewhere!!!--..as I just moved and all is in turnoil right now.)

There are some mistakes on that list
11-Sep-72 Lee Lassiter F-4J USN AIM-9 MiG-21 N.
John Cummings USN
Both are Marines with VMFA-333. The only all Marine crew to make a kill in Vietnam.
CW5. McCormack,.......It is possible the MIG was alerted to a slow moving..... possibly an easy target......and went in "FOR THE KILL!".. Only to later see the words.... MARINES... on the side of the Cobra....And realizing his MISTAKE..... EJECTED... to save his AXX!!
