Patrick Martin's Hook Code, United States Navy and Marine Corps Aviation Tail Code Markings shows BL; Maj. John Elliott's The Official Monogram US Navy & Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide, v.4, shows the code as RL. The official lists of tail codes in OPNAV Notice 05400 (Naval Aeronautical Organization) don't even list HML-268.
Which is correct, BL, RL, or nothing?
I served with HML268 in maint. control 1974-1976 at New River N.C. and took a det.out on a Med. Cruise, but are now having trouble remembering the Squdron or the Ship we went with but I remember the C.O. as LT. COL WIMBLER. I cannot remember the Tail Code either. I am looking for the HML-268 Patch as well.
Check the first line.
That's the reason I asked the question. If that's the correct code, then ok; if not, it needs to be corrected. No sense passing on bum scoop.:D
Updated call signs for HMM-263/VMM-263
This information is from the former CO of VMM-263
>Gary,
> When I started as a 263er (beginning in 1991), our squadron callsign was "Thunder." I was out of the squadron for about a decade from 1996-2006 and I am sure there were some temporary callsigns, but when I took command in 2006 the squadron's last callsign was still "Thunder."
>
> The only exceptions to "Thunder" that I recall during my time in the squadron are 1) during 1995 when we were in the Adriatic supporting NATO operations in Bosnia, we got stuck with a theater callsign and we were "Linus" for a while and 2) during the deployment to Iraq we were "Steadfast. I also know that during HMM-263's last deployment to Iraq, they operated under the callsign of "Sexton."
>
> That's all I know off of the top of my head. VMM-263 is currently out West on a training deployment but the next time I contact them, I'll see if I can get you in contact with the Historical officer to see if there were any other callsigns.

Ok, I finally was able to confirm that HML-268 used BL.
I have the HML-268 patches; check FREEDOM HILL PX: SQUADRON PATCHES. When did HML-268 become HMM-268?
HML-268 deactivated 30 September 1977 at New River. They reactivated at Tustin 1 March 1979 as HMM-268. Current tail code is YQ.
