hello fellas,my grandpa served in korea in the war, and i love hearing about his war stories.im 23 years old and am part of a forum of guys that are making an authentic war game in trubute to the men that lost their lives in korea.
http://www.bf-korea.de/eng/index.php 😎
the reason that i am here is becuas i was looking for pictures of the H-13 sioux and the sikorskiy H-19 helios with mounted 30. & 50.cal mgs.we were including the h-13 sioux and the sikorskiy H-19 in the game.my grandfather told me today that the helios had these guns mounted on them for protection.i bileve him but my friends need proof for historical accuracy, we were only going to have the choppers to retrieve wounded solders and take them back to mash sites in game.
i need pics that are actual korean war era photos.i have searched endlesly for pics from 1950-53 and cant find them.i know that in viet nam these choppers were retro fitted with guns, but need only real korean pics.please if you kind gentlemen could provide links or photos of said choppers i would be greatly indebted to you.thank you for listining to me ramble on and have a good day.;)
I looked through some of my books and came up with this in "Marines and Helicopters 1962-1973" Library of Congress Card No. 76-600052; PCN 190 003074 00----no ISBN number.
On page 83--- a short recount of helos shooting in Korea. "The crews could shoot back. One of the earliest examples of a helicopter crewman firing at the enemy was recorded in 1952. Staff Sergeant Leo A. Masud in Korea had used a sniper rifle from a CH-19. The accuracy obtained from shooting out the door of that unstable, premitive helicopter, unfortunitanitly, was not recorded. Vietnam was somewhat different."
No pictures.
I shot my .38 pistol and an M-79 out the side window of a Huey, so I am sure many helo crew men shot individual weapons whenever they thought that type of fire was necessary with whatever weapon was at hsnd.
Wow thanks for the info!Im primarily looking for info on possible field modifications. ie. mgs welded to the craft, but thank you for this invaluble information!really kool!
Thanks for replying to my thread.
MGs welded to Aircraft?
Anthony,
You need to remember that helicopters were in their infant stages for military use in Korea. Everyone was spending a lot of hours just learning how to fly and maintain them. Modifications weren't in the mix for a time, unless it helped us to improve one or the other, flying or fixing!
There were some UH-34D's from HMM-365 in Viet Nam, during the early years, that were purported to be the first Marine helo "gunship" according to Marine Aviation publications I have read over the years
If Paul Moore reads this he'll let us know, since he was a Line Chief in Korea. I'll see if I can contact him and see what he might have to say on the subject. He has definately been there and done that!!
H19 Gun Mounts
I was in VMO-6 that used the Bell HTL & The HO5S of course we only hauled casualties & 1 st Div personnel , observation etc. I mostly saw H19 from the original 161 Sqd in flight. Not sure about the Welding question for the 50 cal door gun. Only welding I could picture would be possiibly the mount for the gun. I will try & contact my old friend if he is still alive & see what he can tell. Only had photo of H19 in flight during Korea. SF PM
wow guys thanks for the replyes.i know that my grandpa has said that 90%of the helios we used for medivac, and something like 10% he estimated had guns.i know sbout the H-34 in nam.i have a few pics of those my self,im just having a hard time finding any info about any field modifications on the H-19. thank you guys for the info.:)ill keep you posted if i find any thing out.
I doubt there was anything like a 50cal mounted on any Korea era helicopters. We got to Nam in Dec of 66 with our CH-46 squadron and the most powerful gun we could mount was the M-60. The gun mounts were soon beefed up to take the 50cal and I'll tell you once you used a 50cal you didn't want the M-60 anymore! We learned to fall in love with the 50cal and the gooks learned to keep their heads down.

I was in HMR161 IN kOREA jAN 53 -55. I flew as crew chief on an HRS 2 [H19] up at Musan-ne. I carried a 45 and a 38 pistol . Yes there times we fired them. I can't remember any weapons mounted in any of our Helo's. You might check with Charley Allen he was there the same time I was. He's should be listed on popasmoke. If you can't find his email address let me know. I keep in touch with him.
