Re: Favorite Marine Movies
How about the HBO series "The Pacific".
Just finished watching the series for the second time and reading the books that the series was based on.
The book by Eugene Sledge "With the Old Breed" was outstanding in the portrayal of what those Marines went through in the Pacific. However, it was also gut-wrenching.
I didn't have much use for the book by Robert Leckie, "Helmet for My Pillow". Thought it was self-serving and self-centered.
The other movie that hits home for me though is FMJ with Gunny R. Lee Ermey.

I believe the 'Seige of Firebase Gloria' is a good one as well, as the 'DI', by Jack Web. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
Re: Favorite Marine Movies
Ace you're right about fire base Gloria. another good one is called purple hearts about a navy doctor serving with Marines in nam ! R Lee is in it so ya know it's good ! sf kc Some one should make a movie about Chesty ,Maj. Pete Ellis ,the banana wars, chapultapec ,etc
non illigitimus carborundum:)MAF gripe ... deadbugs on windshield...action taken...R&R with live bugs!
" Pete Ellis "
I didn't mean to demote Lt. Col. Earl Hancock Ellis , as he has allways been one of my heroes ! I do think He & Chesty would make great subjects for movies ! sf kc
non illigitimus carborundum:)MAF gripe ... deadbugs on windshield...action taken...R&R with live bugs!

My Dad took my brother and I to the flick at MCAS Cherry Point to see "The Sands of Iwo Jima" when we were pretty young. Dad was a machine gun team leader with 5th Marines on Guadalcanal. He loved the Marine Corps and was a great Dad. My brother was KIA with 5th Marines on 26 May 67. Here are their pictures. My brother is on the right at Tam Ky.

Re: Favorite Marine Movies
My Dad and I used to watch the series on TV, "Victory at Sea" together. You could see some of the Marine Corp action sometimes. He was in the Navy WWII Vet. and saw a lot of action from the Atlantic to the Pacific. We were pretty faithful at watching the series, as well a lot of the movies mentioned. I sure miss that man, passed away several years ago now. He always told me one thing, "Never join the Marine Corp." I was a stubborn kid, and just like my Dad, except for that one thing, I was a "Marine." I was also born on the 4th of July, that may have had some influence as well.

Didnt see many but was in the area when most were originated > One that I wish was made was the actual battle as it really happened at Wake Island. My hero there was Tsgt Bill Hamilton an old friend. He was an NAP (Graduated Sgt 1937) flying the F4 Wilodcat & also the Maintenance Chief. There was a Movie but poorly constructed !! Bill passed years back but he was with me in Vietnam 1967. SF PM

I think your right about that ,and its to bad that we didn't get more interest on many movies that could have made great ones. Hopeful that Some one may be out there to do more from Our Nam time too.
