Wally,
I found a grave marker at Riverside National Cemetery bearing the name
SGT MAJ James A Tubbs
We had a Cpl James A Tubbs in VMO-6 in the late sixties. Do you know of a web page where I might fine the background of the SGTMAJ to see if he is my Tubbs?
Thanks.
Bush
VMO-6 67-69
Hope this helps!
Social Security records for this James A Tubbs state his SS card was issued in Alabama. Does that help?.... National Gravesite links are not working, and the Riverside Cemetery info is limited to what is probably on the headstone/marker
JAMES A TUBBS 23 Jun 1945 06 Apr 1992 (from SS)
Tubbs, James A, b. 06/23/1945, d. 04/06/1992, SGTMAJ USMC, Oceanside; San Diego;; Ca 92057, Plot: 32 499, bur. 04/13/1992, (from Riverside Cemetery)
James Tubbs
Thanks for the feed back.
VMO-6 Tubbs was from Birmingham.
A had a Tubbs as a bunk mate while attending Aviation School in Memphis.
Tubsey was older than me and was able to get Alcahol. He used to come in drunk as a skunk.
The time period was from February 66 until Aug 66. I went to New River and VMO-1 and then to VMO-2 at Marble. I lost track of Tubsey. I'm wondering if this is the same Tubbs

Opo,
That would be the right time frame for Memphis, but the marker I found shows this Tubbs was born in 1946. I met him at Memphis and it seems to my old memory that we went to VMO-1 towards the end of '66, then on to VMO-6 Dec '67. Jim Tubbs was a tall thin dark green Marine, went by the name "Slim", "Po Slim" and occasionally "Everhard" when he was in a really good mood. Seems mostly he was called "Slim." I can't speak to the drinking part though.
James A Tubbs
I served with Jim Tubbs at NAMTD 1030 Camp Pendleton in 1972, he was a SNCO at that time. We were teaching the AH-1J & UH-1N. The last time I saw him was in the 1979. He was a SgtMaj when he retired and I heard that he took his own life.
Cpl Tubbs @ Khe Sanh
I knew Tubbs from the early days in school at Memphis. On page 249 of David Douglas Duncan's "War Without Heroes", you can see a great shot of Tubbs in his VMO-6 aircraft wiht his beat up flight helmet on.
On 28 February 1968, HMM-262 lost 22 men in a shoot down near the Rockpile. Tubbs was the crew chief of a VMO-6 bird that picked up Danny Gard, who was the only survivor of the crash but later died that evening. I remember Tubbs telling me that he tried to comfort Danny during the ride to Dong Ha, "but the guy could only tell me he was from Texas". I thanked him for being with my comrade on his final flight.
If Tubbs did indeed take his own life, it is sad beyonds words as I always felt a kindness in him and he deserved better.

Always Sad
To hear another marine may of ended life, is sad and heart Breaking. I feel as do many of those coming back that we all have things that we may not talk or share with others. Its this same thing that we all need to get out and share with others, so that it don't eat us up inside. Its just my thoughts and prayers that more will come out so they can see that their not ALONE. God Bless you all and may he keep each one of us Safe. HIP for you buddie , I want to let you know you was miss at the reunion. Later π
