Subject: CH-53 question
To: webmaster@popasmoke.com
Good evening,
My name is Mike Wilson. I am a contract civilian photographer aboard Naval
Air Station Patuxent River by day and conducting research for a history of
the Marine Corps CH-53 helicopter by night.
While reading "Assault from the Sea: Essays on the History of Amphibious
Warfare", I found a reference to a CH-53 that was "lost to an SA-7(Strella)
missile" on 11 July 1972 in an area north of Quang Tri City.
Moreover, I found this reference on your website:
www.popasmoke.com/visions/image.php?source=1849 and I'm wondering if there
are one and the same or different?
Finally, I am aware the aircraft belonged to 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade
(MAB) but not the specific Marine Amphibious Unit (MAU) or squadron. I am
also trying to isolate the specific BuNo as well.
With that said, can you or your members fill in the blanks of this
particular mishap?
Thank you,
Mike Wilson
