Hello Wally,
On Sept 21st 1967 companies E, F, and G attacked an NVA-fortified position all day. The unit is 2nd Bn. 4th Marines under operational control of 1/9. Hotel was held in reserve. We were roughly 1800 meters east of Con Thien. Bill Woidyla flew some medevacs for us that day. I understand he got a medal for his actions. Would it help if I sent you the combat after action report?
Late in the day a bird dog spotted 400-500 NVA reinforcements approaching our position. Planes and gunships kept them off of us. We were down to around 150 men and they would have wiped us out for sure. Anyway, a book is in the works and the pilots that continued to come into that hot LZ deserve our thanks and to have their story told.
Semper Fi,

Bill Woidyla
Major Woidyla passed away from heart failure a few years ago. Might try others in HMM-361 to get more infor on the flights in question.
RIP, Bill.
