Karen and I attended the opening day of the Fargo (ND) Air Museum's Vietnam Week today, May 1st. This is the second annual of this event and they once again did a nice job of lining up exhibits. Special this year was a contigent of Canadian vet's who had joined US Military. A memorial wall was constructed this year, listing Canadian citizen KIA's. I believe this is being moved to Winnipeg for permanent display.
My purpose for this posting and a big reason for going to Fargo today was the scheduled appearance of a UH34 Marine chopper (I assume a UH-34D). Turned out it was a last minute cancellation. An inquiry to the museum management indicated this aircraft is at Larimore, ND. Anyone aware of a flyable '34 up in that area? I was surprised there is an airworthy UH-34D in the upper midwest, although I recall seeing one putting up power line towers about 25 years ago.
Are there more of these still flying (beside Gerald Hail's)?

H34s
I recently saw 3 at San Jose Airport a small aviation unit. There are many around the world that have had the twin pack turbines installed and do utility work. Not many years ago before I retired from Sikorsky they were in Thialand, Australia & Canada. I am sure they are still flying. Also one of my friends in Arizona has the old Chicage Air Ways H34 helicopters in passenger configuration. They are much like the the life of the old DC3 , C47 or Gooney bird as they were called being in service since the 1930 ies in that case. SF PM
About 3 years ago I heard that familiar sound of rotors and a round engine while sitting in my office. Bolting out the door into the parking lot, I saw an H-34 in Marine colors low level right over the top. Called all the airports in the area and got nothing. Finally talked to someone at the Marysville, CA airport last year who was aware of the plane. It was normally parked at the owners house near Yuba City but was, at the time, parked at the Yuba City Airport for a paint job.

HMM-363
Woops, meant MCAS Miramar there. Had Camp Pendleton's two museums (USMC Mechanized Museum and the LCAC Museum) stuck on my mind! But sorry I do not know much about the H-34 other than it's a really nice chopper! There's some info on the other boards and lower down on this one I think about it.
And also continuing wtih this topic, Jack's Government Surplus in Tucson, AZ near-ish Davis Monothan AFB (last stop for hundreds of beautiful multimillion dollar aircraft, most are kept up with though) has, I think, a dozen or non-op CH-34's in varying conditions.
Mirimar H-34
The H-34 at Miramar (BU# 50219) is display only, not in flying condition.
During the summer, the museum has an open cockpit day on the 3rd Saturday of every month. The last open cockpit day this year is Sep 18. Come on by and climb in. I'll be there as a guide.
By the way, 50219 has at least 32 patched bullet-sized holes in its fuselage. I flew it out of Danang with HMM-361 in Sep '65.
Someone told me that they were flying media around in an H-34, must have got confused!
I'll see if I can make it there!
The BUNO should read 150219.

34's still flying
There are at least two 34's still flying in Florida. One works installing A/C units, etc. on roofs and the other I saw flying power line recon in N. central Fl. They both are still being powered by the R1820. I could never forget that sound. Have a few T-28's around also. Just lost one north of Tampa recently. Just refurbished and crashed on test flight.
This all from the "Reigning Hurricane Capitol of the U.S."
