Had the opportunity to visit the National Marine Corps Museum with a couple of HML-167 Avionics guys a week ago last Sat. and was thououghly impressed by the place. Makes one proud"er" to be a Marine. We had to hustle though as it was "Month of the Military child" day and the place was crawling with knee biters from noon on. Was able to get a good look at most of the displays and had time for a cold one at Tun Tavern. We all did notice the Huey Gunship at the entrance to the Vietnam section had a hoist mounted at the base of the "hell hole". Never saw one while in Vietnam 68/69 anyone else see one in country?

Oh!! That thing in the Hell Hole is called a cargo hook.
The hoist is on top near the right side door of the bird. That's so the crewchief can also operate the thing besides the Pilot.

In HML-167 in Vietnam all the cargo hooks, hoists had been removed from our aircraft. With a full load of fuel and ammo we were at max gross weight, so we really didn't need cargo hooks.

Allyns right. When we sent a bird to overhaul in 70-71 we had to sent the cargo hook and the hoist. They were suppose to be stored in boxes, but we never could find them.
