can anyone out there help a poor grunt trying to get info for va claim.I had platoon in 1/3--picked up at Con Thien on 11/13/68--and 46 took rounds thru floor into tranny--leading to quick smack down in Leatherneck Square. We stayed to secure helo--which was later lifted out--by skycrane--Or perhaps 53.

I know date is right because I wrote my folks day before and they kept letter.

Thanks,

John Murphy

The only H-46 I have on that date suffering damage from ground fire, was BuNo 154012 with HMM-365. With the date and the BuNo, you can try asking the Navy Yard at Washington for more information. According to the aircraft history cards, this aircraft was with HMM-161 at the time?

Sid,
HMM-365 was in New River in November 1968, maybe preparing for a Carib cruise.

"USMC Aircraft Accidents from Enemy Action July 1963 through January 1973" on the Naval Historical Center's site shows 154841 damaged 13 Nov 68. Identifier code E50 is HMM-161. The 161 Command Chronology for Nov 68 mentions an aircraft taking small arms fire near XD6757 with two minor injuries. The day before YR-31 received 5 hits near Con Thien and landed there for repairs. According to the Naval Center list this aircraft was 154012.

Thanks for the correction on the unit.
I'm not sure if the Navy Yard will hold details on this accident, as the aircraft was not declared a loss, but they are worth a shout. Remember to include the date and BuNo. See
http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/org4-2.htm

Aircraft Accident Summaries/Aircraft Mishap Investigation Reports

The aircraft accident reports are a record of operational losses. The summary reports normally do not include reports on combat losses. Presently, the collection covers the period 1920 to December 1979. The records are filed by type of aircraft and date of the accident. The collection is only on microfilm. NOTE: Without the type of aircraft and date of the accident it is almost impossible to locate the report on the microfilm. Requestors must have the type of aircraft and date of the accident in order to obtain a copy of the report. Records for the post December 1979 period are held by the Naval Safety Center. Their address is Commander Naval Safety Center, Attn: Code 71, 375A Street, Norfolk,VA 23511-4399.
