H-46 Collage

Identification of the pictures in the Collage:

1. Center. Saigon bird, taken at Popasmoke re-union, Pensacola, 2002.

Top row, starting from left:

2. HMM-261, EM-10, near New River NC, 1970.

3. Recon extract, near DMZ, HMM-165, 1967. YW-23. Picture taken by TOM MIX.

4. HMM-165, Miramar, 2001. LtCol. Mike Zeisler's last flight as CO. Airplane # is YW-11. How about that for a co-incidence, Joe Reed's old bird.

Middle row, left and right:

5. HMM-165, DaNang Bay, August 1969. Loading aboard USS Valley Forge, shipping out to Okinawa.

6. HC-3, Det 105 (Navy, sorry guys but the last time I checked we were on the same side, although I admit we weren't fighting the same war.) Coming aboard USS Mars, Tonkin Gulf, 1971.

Bottom row, starting from left:

7. HMM-165, YW-11, echelon left, over Ky Ha, 1967. Picture taken by TOM MIX.

8. HC-3 again, starting a buttonhook to come aboard. 100 knots, 50 feet and 200 yards out. Tonkin Gulf, 1971.

9. HMM-165, VIP bird, YW-1, MMAF, 1969.

All the pictures, except for the 2 noted taken by Tom Mix (#s 3 and 7), were taken by me.

John

Thanks for the information.

Obviously I had to reduce the size to get it on the NOTAM, could you give us the actual overall dimensions?

H-46 Collage

The dimensions of the original file are 13 ins by 19 ins, at 300 pixels per inch.

It is quite a large picture, almost poster size. I did the H-53 picture the same size. Actually I did the H-53 picture first and then thought "I can do this for the H-46". Since I have many more pictures of the H-46, the biggest problem was deciding what to leave off. Sorry about the Navy, guys, but they just kept on pushing in. The original, when printed out, is quite sharp. I can print it out at any size but 13 by 19 is the limit of what I can do. Outside labs can print the picture almost any size you want. Like most things in life though, if you want it bigger, bring more money. Huge, bring lots.

The trouble is, even 13 by 19, framed, dominates any wall it is hung on and any bigger and you can get very negative reactions from the 'better half'. The wife of a good friend said to me "Stop bringing those huge pictures. I've only the garage wall left."

When I look at the pictures on Popasmoke, there are so many good ones that choosing a sample for a collage is almost impossible for me. Suggestions???

John

YW-11

I was blown away when I first went to HMM-165 web site and there sat "my" bird on the front, YW-11!! Same picture John has here on the bottom/left. This may or may not have been the same bird, since I didn't get there until late '67, but they all look alike when you paint 'em green and put the numbers on them! Mike Horowicki and I flew her many an hour, and I even learned how do to pretty good roll on landings in her! (Thanks to Eddie Fischer and J.J.Smith) Was Eddie the only 2/Lt. HAC in the Marine corps?? He was VERY smooth and a quality guy as well as a pilot!
Thanks for the pic, John!
Joe:)

H-46 Collage

I've been in contact with Tom Mix and he has given me permission to use the 2 pictures of his that I used in the collage. I could have solved the problem by using 2 of my own pictures but Tom's are so good I wanted to use them. I showed the picture of the Recon Extract to the Art Editor of a newspaper I do freelance work for and he hung it outside hs office as an example of a picture that needs no caption, the picture itself tells you everything. Good photographers try to achieve that but it's hard and we rarely get it.

I have 2 versions of the Collage, the one at the begining of this thread and one that I captioned on the print. I've posted a copy of that one with this post.

I've been asked if I will allow people to download the picture and of course, the answer is 'Yes'. But downloading from this thread gives a picture that is very low resolution and might just make it to a 5 by 7 print. I have the 2 prints in various sizes, from 4 by 6 up to 13 by 19. The latter is a BIG file but if you have a high speed line it isn't too bad. If you email me at jdullighan@aol.com, I will download whatever file you want. Tell me the print you want, captioned or uncaptioned and what size you want. If you have a high speed line download the biggest file and you can reduce it to whatever size you like.
