UH-1E on recon flight of Dong Ha TAOR was stuck by an undetermined number of .50 cal and small arms fire in cockpit and cabin area, incapacitating pilot and flight surgeon [observer], causing aircraft to enter uncontrolled flight and inverted nose-down attitude. Aircraft exploded on impact at YD 195625, and fire resulted. Fire caused 2.75 rockets and 7.62 mm machine gun ammunition to explode, preventing crew of chase aircraft from assisting crew. As a result, the pilot, flight surgeon, crew chief and gunner were killed.

Family Information
We served in Vietnam at the same time in 1966/67. Paul is one of your brave heros that was kia 3 days before his deros. He has been sorley missed by his family. Semper Fi
"I was on the USS Turner Joy off the coast south of Danang doing gunfire support missions and talked to him 2 days before he was killed. I requested duty in country and got assigned to a Swift boat div. His DEROS was April 2nd and I tried to get home before my family was notified but I didnt make it."

Tribute placed at the University of Notre Dame by classmate Daniel Rapp honoring those graduates of the Class of 1959 lost. Names include Capt J. J. Carroll, USMC and Lt. Curtis Baker, USN, both lost in hostile action in Vietnam serving the USMC.
