I met up with the USS Iwo Jima at Okinawa in October 1969 my way back to the States. I was on the USS Bexar- a cargo transport converted to troops. This is when President Nixon cut all Marine tours to 12 months. The Iwo was berth just across from the Bexar as we were taking on supplies and a food fight erupted. As I recall a Navy officer in Whites was going to the Iwo and someone on the Bexar hit him with a tomato, and the food fight was on. The Bexar CO had to order all of us to our racks as we had manned the rail to look at what was going on. I understand that this may be epic lore in the Navy. Spent 22 days at sea on the way back to the States and it was a rough ride to say the least. -Submitted by: George Lovell [geo49341@charter.net] 2011-05-21
