I had the privilige of visiting this hospital ship when I was witht he 80th Gen Support Command in 1969. They did wonders for the Vienamese people! -Submitted by: Chaplain G. DeVault [revggd@verizon.net] 2011-03-04

During my Tour, 1969, I had occasion to be aboard the Helgoland...just visiting. There was a German Swastica flag on a lower deck. The nurses were beautiful. We were in uniform but the Captain of the Helgoland warned against wearing uniform because the Helgoland treated VC as well as friendly forces. His words, not mine. Was a beautiful ship. Chartered by the United States...and treated the enemy...very interesting. But remembering too, Bandages are for everyone. -Submitted by: Bill D. [bocsi505@windstream.net] 2010-04-30

I remember taking Vietnamese civilians to this ship. In our village there were vicitims of Black Plague, also along with a young Vietnamese child that had a tumor growing on top of her head. That was in 1970. I remember the Ships deck as being spotless clean. Thanks for the picture you posted. It bring back a time almost forgotten. This ship The Helgoland was operated by a German medical foundation. The rumor was that when it left its port in DaNang in the early evening that it was going to be a hot time in the town tonight. Which usually meant some rocket attacks! -Submitted by: Doc W.P. Was this the ship that some nurses were kidnapped when they drove out into the countryside? Seems to me I remember an incident like that. I was chaplain with 2/1 south of DaNang in 1969 -Submitted by: Arthur Pepper [apepper@comcast.net] 2007-04-15
