CH-46 Down (1)
Believed to be an aircraft from HMM-265 that crashed in the water south of Phu Bai - Spring 1969 (Photo by Doctor Jim Waltermire).
Comments from Greg Gentzler, correction: This aircraft is YT 11 of HMM-164. It crashed Mar 1 1969 the day of the squadron party while on Test hop at 12:35. One of the marines who is sitting on the aircraft is Cpl B. Hahn of HMM-164. The crew chief, Gregg Gentler, and the pilot, Maj. Elkenbury were the only survivors. I was that crew chief. The co-pilot was 1st Lt. Thomas Lee Burton who died that day.
gregg gentzler on Aug 1, 2006 07:40 AM

Comment by: Park Cuseo on Aug 3, 2006 09:07 AM
I was in the 2nd plane (gunner), we were flying low level and they appeared to nose in. Park This flight was a flight of one, as I said earlier a test flight. And the only other a/c in the area was the copra that made a gun run to scare off our vistors in there little boats and black pjs, as we waited on top of what was left of the tunnel cowling for the 46 to hoist us up (us being myself and the pilot). You must have this confused with another accident. SF Satch -Submitted by: gregg gentzler [the4gentz@charter.net] 2007-02-01
