I'm writing on behalf of Van's widow, Suzanne, who would like to know the details surrounding Van's award of the Silver Star. She is unable to find the citation and would appreciate your help. If you have information, please pass it on to Suzy at

    Thanks & Semper Fi,

    Silver Star Mission - 12/8/68

Maj Van S. Reed, USMC, SerNo 066952, of Gainesville, FL received the Silver Star on 8 December 1968 with HMM-165.

Maj Reed was the flight leader that day in YW-16 (cc unknown) with Copilot Groulx (sp?). An insert and extraction were flown, along with an emergency extract with support of UH-1E's and F-4's.

Other pilots on Mission 19 that day were Turek and Hunt in YW-17 (cc McMillion) and YW-3 (cc Ross), and Sproule and Jividen (cc Carlson) in third aircraft.

Details of mission are not available at this time

I flew with him, too Terry! Remember his smooth demeanor and soft touch on the sticks!
